What to expect

The department is committed to creating inclusive interview experiences. We do this by:

  • appointing interview panels with a diversity of genders, backgrounds, and experiences.
  • using behaviour-based interview questions based on the key selection criteria (KSC).
  • asking every candidate the same set of questions.
  • following a standardised, structured process.

If you're invited to an interview, some questions you can ask the hiring manager to prepare are:

  • how long will the interview last?
  • who will be on the interview panel, and what are their roles?
  • is there anything you recommend I review about the department or role?
  • can I use notes to help with my responses?

Preparation for interview questions

Prepare examples that relate to the Key Selection Criteria (KSC) and practise talking about them using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method. You can use examples from work, volunteering, or personal experiences, as these all show transferable skills.

We encourage using a structured format like STAR to answer questions. This structure helps you clearly describe past experiences by including:

  • situation: The context or challenge you faced.
  • task: What you needed to achieve.
  • action: What steps you took.
  • result: The outcome of your actions.
