Working with us
The department continues to build stronger relationships with Traditional Owners in Victoria. We value the unique knowledge and strengths that First Peoples bring to our workforce culture.
The department works with Aboriginal communities and people living across the state to provide:
- employment
- training
- business opportunities
Everyone has the right to feel safe, respected and supported at work. We work to create a culturally safe workplace where people feel safe to be themselves. Everyone should feel valued and free to practice their culture, spirituality and beliefs.

The department is committed to creating a workplace that is inclusive and welcoming for people with disability. We recognise that the nature of disability is deeply personal and that people with disability have diverse experiences.
If items like fidget toys or noise-cancelling headphones help with sensory needs, feel free to bring them to your interview. You’re also welcome to bring a water bottle, notepad, pen or other necessary items to perform at your best.
The Victorian Public Sector Commission’s (VPSC) website provides more information on disability employment.
Eligibility
Recruitment adjustments ensure people with disability have equal employment opportunities. As defined by the VPSC's Workplace Adjustments Policy, people with disability include:
- people with health conditions, and
- carers.
Process
You can request adjustments at any stage during recruitment. You can do this by including your request in your application or contacting the person listed in the job advertisement.
Some adjustments require advance notice, so please let us know as early as possible.
The hiring manager will contact you to better understand your needs. They will then arrange adjustments to remove or manage any barriers while also balancing what’s reasonable for the department and the selection panel.
Types of adjustments
Adjustments are made on an individual basis to address the specific barriers created by the recruitment process. This can include a range of changes, including (but not limited to):
- receiving interview questions in advance to assist with cognitive processing
- interpreter services or accessible materials to assist with communication
- accessible room or facilities to assist with physical access
- a room away from windows or an air conditioning duct
- a specific day or time for your interview so you can perform at your best
- making the panel aware of your preferences (i.e. avoiding handshakes) or circumstances (i.e. visible skin condition)
Find out more about recruitment and workplace adjustments in the VPS on the VPSC’s website.
How recruitment decisions are made
Our recruitment process follows clear standards set by the Victorian Public Sector Commission (VPSC). These standards help ensure every applicant is treated fairly.
- Fair and reasonable treatment: Employees experience clear, consistent, and unbiased processes. Processes are transparent and use objective criteria.
- Merit-based decisions: Roles are appointed to the person best suited for the role. Decisions are based on skills, experience, and potential.
- Equal employment opportunity: Recruiting is inclusive and free from discrimination. Everyone has a fair chance to perform at their best.
- Respect for human rights: Employment decisions uphold human rights as set out in the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.
- Access to review: Employees have clear ways to raise concerns or seek feedback, if something doesn't feel right.
- Career development: Long-term growth and development of employees is valued. Especially in ongoing public service roles.
