The Norwegian-born Canadian firefighter has worked consecutive fire seasons with both Forest Fire Management Victoria and BC Wildfire Services in British Columbia, Canada.
Ellen finished her third season at Mansfield in Victoria’s north east and was deployed to this season’s most significant fires including the Grampians, Little Desert and Budj Bim.
'I’m grateful I was deployed to the major incidents and was able to give to the community. You don’t always get to be the person who goes and I got that chance this year.'
During her first season in 2020-21, Ellen faced a series of health challenges that caused her to return home earlier than expected. But the setbacks only made her more determined to return to Australia.
'I get to work hard and be outside all day for six months of the year and travel and see the world for the other six months,' she said.
'I’ve learned so much through being a firefighter. I want to encourage people to have a go and apply even if they think they aren’t ready for it.'
Ellen began her emergency services career as a BC Wildfire Dispatcher, which is the equivalent of a Triple Zero operator.
'Being in dispatch opened up that world to me. I wanted to find meaning in my work.'
'Being a firefighter has built my confidence in the outdoors and helped me mature and be more resilient - they really bring out the best in me.'
Currently, Ellen is working as a firefighter with BC Wildfire.
'During the season, you spend a lot of time with your crew, and they become your best friends.' Ellen shared. 'It has allowed me to meet some of my closest friends, which is a special experience that you wouldn't have if you didn't take that leap.'
We are currently recruiting for seasonal firefighter roles, including designated Aboriginal positions across Victoria.
