'Where am I from?'

For Underbool-based seasonal firefighter Emily Murdoch, the answer is the quiet town of Colignan, 50 km southwest of Mildura.

Just 6 months into the role, Emily's days are anything but routine. 'My work is widely varied,' she explains, ‘ranging from maintaining vehicle access to tracks around my work area, to attending deployments across the state, to assist with bushfires or planned burns.’

What makes this entry into firefighting even more remarkable is its timing. Emily applied for the job as a seasonal firefighter the day after the applications opened, whilst she was still in high school.

Driven by a clear passion, she began the firefighter role three days after her final year 12 exam.

The spark for this ambition?

A strong family connection. ‘My dad worked as a firefighter for the department for over forty years,’ Emily shares. Growing up immersed in tales of travel, helicopter rides, and encounters with diverse people became undeniable.

‘I love the opportunities to travel that my job provides. Being able to visit different locations of the state is my favourite part of this job.’

One experience already stands out: her first major bushfire deployment to the Grampians in December 2024. ‘I remember driving closer to the fire and seeing the entire sky lit up orange by the fire and smoke,’ Emily recalls.

The impact of witnessing such a powerful force firsthand, followed by weeks of dedicated work, left a lasting impression.

Despite being in her first bushfire season, Emily has already embraced numerous training opportunities, gaining certifications in 4WD, firefighting, chainsaw operations, and mixing and loading aerial fire retardant. This allows her to play a crucial role in aerial firefighting efforts.

For women considering a career in firefighting, Emily's advice is clear: ‘Do it! It truly is an amazing opportunity.’ She emphasises the unique chance to spend time outdoors, travel, meet new people and experience diverse tasks daily.

Working in the small town of Underbool also offers a unique charm. ‘I enjoy the quiet environment, as well as being able to meet and talk to the locals.’

From the calm landscapes of Colignan to the intense frontlines of bushfires, Emily’s story is an inspiring reminder that a fulfilling and adventurous career can begin straight from school, fuelled by a desire to make a real difference.
